MAX SAYS –
Thoughts from the canine mind

Max is a unique character.

For you browsers who are anchored in reality, Max is a ninety pound yellow Labrador who is the author’s devoted companion. He contributes energy, vitality and spunk to the lives of all who know him. He possesses an indomitable spirit, boundless curiosity and a general sense of cheerfulness characterized by a huge, constantly wagging tail. In real world terms, Max is a big, loveable dog.

On the other hand –
When the author seeks escape from the chaos and stress of the law practice, it is wonderful to mentally meander through the canine mind of Max. Much as Snoopy is a source of wisdom and wit for Charlie Brown, Max provides Robert Matlock with a diversion through the question: “What would Max have to say about this?”

In fact, this section of the website is entirely a diversion – a bulletin board upon which the author can post random thoughts, quotes and photos – all the while giving Max the credit/blame for its content.

DOG RULES OF LIFE

Between snoozes in the shade of the back yard live oak trees, I contemplated how people exhibit behavior that is sometimes rather strange – even counter-productive at times. If a Labrador were to be placed in charge of training, people would be taught the very valuable tricks of the trade employed by us tail waggers on a day to day basis.

The Labrador Basic Book Of Etiquette would include -

  • When loved ones come home, run to greet them.
  • Never pass up the opportunity of a joyride.
  • Allow the feel of wind and fresh air in your face to be pure ecstasy.
  • When it's in your best interests, practice obedience.
  • Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
  • Take naps often and stretch before rising.
  • Run, romp and play daily.
  • Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
  • Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
  • On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
  • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
  • When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
  • No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout but run right back and make friends.
  • Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
  • Eat with gusto and enthusiasm, but stop when you've had enough.
  • Be loyal.
  • Never pretend to be something you're not.
  • If what you want is buried, dig till you find it.

Most Important Of All -

  • When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
